Saw Whet Owl

Habitat

These birds are known to be a quiet species, during some seasons…that is. They nest in tree cavities, and others various places that they or one singular bird, could hide, eat, or mate in privacy.

 

Interesting facts

-The saw-whet owl is highly nocturnal.
-The choosing of the Northern saw-whet owls nest is mostly chosen by the female owl but, the male intend to help by finding good nest sites.
-The nests of the owls are mostly in excavated holes (usually those of northern Flickers and pileated woodpeckers).
-Their wingspan is 16.5-18.9 inches, 42- 48 centimeters. They can weigh as much as a robin. Adults wingspan can go from 45 to 60 cm.
-Northern Saw-Whet fledglings are dark rust in the chest with black heads
-These animals are mostly seen with brown feathers and a white spotted head. Their small, with a lack of ear tufts. Try to look for some of these owls at Beaver Lake! Thanks for reading!

This owl doesn’t have many predators surprisingly enough with it’s weight, though it does have some. A group of crows will target this bird and attack it until it is dead. Other predators such as, bigger owls starling and squirrels.

Distinguishing Feature

-A very recognizable feature about the Northern Saw-Whet owl is it’s large gazing eyes. These huge eyes are best known for seeing in the dark. The downside to having these huge, eyes is in the daytime their vision is blurred/faded.
-The call of this bird is very unusual/ different/ loud. Many have described this owl to have one of the most unique calls.

Diet

The saw-whet owl hunts and eats small mammals such as small deer mice and bats. During the night, They mostly hunt from low perches, to have a better chance of catching the prey.

 

Status

These animals status is at least concern. Their lifestyle makes it difficult to identify the actual population. Scientists can only assume that more than 2 million spend their life in the united states. They are mostly seen in New York and can be found in Wisconsin.
