Habitat
A Beavers home is a mound of branches called a lodge, which they build in a lake or body of water. The entrances are under water, so the beavers can come and go without being seen.
Status
Beavers have been hunted and trapped extensively in the past, and near the 1900’s the animals were almost gone in their original habitat. But throughout the last century they have recovered and are now in lots of places.
Diet
Beavers like to eat bark, twigs, leaves of trees. They also prefer willow, birch, and aspen.
Predators and Adaptations
Beavers have many predators throughout their life. For example, some of them are Wolves, Wolverines, Lynx, Northern river otters, Humans, Black and brown bears, Coyotes, and Owls.
Distinguishing Feature
They have big teeth so they are able to bite easily. Beavers have webbed feet to help them swim. They also have nearly hairless flat tails.
Interesting Fact
The latin name for the North American beaver is Castor Canadensis. The name “castor” comes from “castoreum” a yellow substance made by glands near the beavers tail.
