Habitat

Barred Owls normally live in large mature forest, high up, and they also live near water.

 

Diet

Barred Owls eat a large variety of foods and animals.  such as mice, moles, rats, squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, possums, birds, fish, etc.  Young barred owls practice hunting by capturing insects, adults sit on a branch and then swoop down on their prey when ready.  barred Owls get poisoned by mice because they eat mice/rat poison.

The barred Owl is one of many endangered species, but it is common in eastern North America.

 

Distinguishing Features

Barred owls usually have brown, almost black eyes, and brown and white feathers.  Barred Owls have a wingspan of 38-45 inches, and have a weight of around 630g (male) or 800g (female).  barred Owls have rounded heads, and distinct calls.  Their faces are concave (having an outline or surface that curves inward like the interior of a circle or sphere).  Barred owls live for 10 years in the wild and 23 years in captivity.  The darkest part of their barring is their upper chest, throat, and head.

 

Predators / Adoptions

A Great Horned owl and a raccoon are predators of a Barred owl.  a raccoon is a predator because they like to take their eggs and younglings from them.  Also sometimes collisions with vehicles and caught in traps meant for other animals.
